Common Sense

					
The artist duo Common Sense is comprised of Dutch installation artist Stan Wannet (b. 1977) and South African performance artist Leila Anderson (b. 1984). Over the last two years they have produced and exhibited work in the Netherlands, China and South Africa, as well as participating in several international residency programs.

Common Sense works with diverse media, creating detailed multi-disciplinary work that fuses electro-kinetic sculpture, photography, video, sound and performance. Their work is both absurd and pragmatic; reflecting and distorting reality while acknowledging its troubling contradictions. Out of an intuitive and irreverent working process, they distil ideas and connect material into sensory, immersive installations. They are intrigued by structures of control: over individuals, bodies, thoughts and objects. Constructing surreal fictions in diverse locale, their working material is human, animal, image and machine. This borderline between living and inanimate material is the space of the uncanny, in which the structural attempts of humans – to order, control and systematize experience – are subverted by the absurd. 
If absurdity is defined as a moment of ambiguity and alienation, caused by a failure of representation, Common Sense exploits this temporary artistic encounter to induce a reactive cocktail of fascination, repulsion, confusion, humour, clarity and cognition.

Recent shows and performances include: ‘88’ – an interactive video installation created on residency at DordtYart Centre for Contemporary Art [NL]; ‘Afrika Lacht’- a total installation of photographs, video and kinetic sculptures, created on residency at De Fabriek Eindhoven [NL]; ‘The Diagnosis’- a site-specific performance installation created for Infecting the City Public Arts Festival [ZA].
